Tournament report Turku Fanatic 2012

Finally I managed to write again something hero also. I've been busy playing the game. Two and three weeks ago I attended tourneys with my jumper/dev army and found them lacking in a game agains dedicated cc-units and terminators.

So this time I modified my list to include Mephiston and assault terminators in a land raider to have some serious cc-threat in addition to my normal jumper/dev army. My list was the following.

Mephiston
2 Priests, 1 with jp
Assault terminators, 3 th/ss and a redeemer
10 ASM, 2 melta, pf
10 ASM, 2 melta, pf
10 ASM, 2 melta, pw
Attack bike, mm
5 devs, 4ml
5 devs, 3ml

All of the five games had all the BRB-missions in them simultaneously with different deployments.

Wrecked Land Raiders make a wall between our armies

My first game was against GK-list that had Coteaz, several psybacks, 2 dreds and a land raider with DCA and a player that has won almost every event last year he attended. The game started as expected me losing few models a turn to GK shooting. I managed to charge my termies in to his 2 purifier squads and got nailed afterwards by the DCA. I also traded Mephy to one strike squad and Coteaz. About turn 4 I realized that the two land raiders were wrecked midfield creating a good los-block with one scenery block and efficiently dividing the gaming table in two with me beeing on the other side with 2 of his vehicles and he on the other side with all his reminding army. Good for me. I took the easy kill points and even managed to secure my home base for a 8-8 draw. He had the objectives.

Second game was against my friend who plays Draigowing supported this time by DCA in a Storm raven and three rifflemans and of course Coteaz. Never won this mach and this time was no exception. 0-30.

Saturday's third and last game was against Space Wolves. They had Logan with 5 assault terminators in a land raider and a second shooty terminator squad in addition to long fangs, grey hunters and scouts. the deployment was DoW. I won the roll of and made him deploy first. He deployed the shooty terminators to big ruin mid field and reserved logan and one GH squad. I Managed to sieze and proceeded to take down the terminator squad in the ruins before logan appeared. All went quite well for me for three turns and I was able to kill the terminatros and one squad of long fangs. Then I made my move and attacked to his side from three different locations and forcing him to choose where to deploy logan and friends. In the end I was a bit too hesitant to push my assault with Mephiston after his assault terminators killed one squad of assault marines on my right flank. In the end I lost kill points and objectives but managed to secure bases killing his outflanking scouts from my objectives. 10-20 defeat. The most exciting game of the tournament. Special thanks for the wine.

Sunday and me being on near the bottom of the pack. My first opponent was and ork player and after a small delay we got to play. My opponent had a bad luck immobilizing his battlewagon with nobs in them in to a terrain and I was able to counter it with my land raider and termies. Mephiston ate one squad of boyz a turn and we had to stop playing after T4. My marines were luckyly better placed than to orks and I won all the missions. He managed to kill my termies and one squad of devs while I had killed his truck, battlewagon, dread and cans in addition to few boyz squad. 30-0 for me. Mephy is pure murder against boyz mobs!

My last opponent was a younger player with two space wolves land raider and a TWC with wolflord. I rolled luckily and he didn't. The TWC ran away from combat with terminators after their charge (I managed to weaken them before with my missiles beforehand) and wreck one land raider with two melta shots. He then decided to quit since I had Mephy to clear the now exposed grey hunters. Not the way I want to win games. 30-0 for me again.

All in all very mixed up tournament. I had very tough opponents on Saturday and due to that a bit easyer ones on sunday. Definitely a good tournament with good to average tables and terrain.  My friend with the draigowing won the tournament and I placed 9th out of 24 players. Next autumn again for sure!

1000pts Tuornament report Turku Part II (No can opener needed)

I had the tournament last Sunday. 4 games on 4x4 tables with good to average terrain on them.
All the missions were equals share kill points and 3 seize ground objectives. My list was:
Libby, jp, shield, lance
Priest, jp
10 asm, 2melta, pf
10 asm, 2melta, pf
10 asm, 2melta, pw, mb
AB, mm
AB, mm

My first opponent was orks with lots of S8 shooting and 3 squad on boyz and 3 cans, no BW or even trucks.
The advanced on the right side of the board to ork lines and I was able to get charge almost every turn.
Game ended after T4 and I had lead in kill points and objectives. 16-4

Second game was against mechdar, 6 warwalkers, 2 tanks with fire dragons and dire avengers and
one squad of scouts. DoW deplo. Again I went second and made my advance from right side witch
was a mistake. While I steamrolled his left flank I was after it too far away from the rest of his
force and the game ended again on T4. Also his rangers managed to tarpit one of my AB and 7 assault
marines for one player turn too long after I multicharged them and 2 warwalkers. (we should have
penalties for too long turns) the game was a draw on both kill points and objectives.
I should have won the game, but made some mistakes. 10-10

3rd game was GK. Finally some marines with rhinos. He had 2 strikes in assbacks, 2 psyffledreads
and 5 terminators and an inquisitor with tda and psycannon. Again I got to go second and made my
advance from the right side in one solid orange mass from spearhead deployment. Strikes in their
coffins were easy kill. Meanwhile he managed to tarpit one asm with the dread. I managed to make
the termies flee for one turn but they re grouped before edge and proceeded to help the tarpitting dread.
After that battle they tried to consolidate to one of the objectives held only by my sarge but it was half
inch too far. Kill points were even and I had the objectives on T5 when the game ended. 15-5.

My last opponent was 96 orks with 7 lootas, 3 deffkoptas and 80 boyz. 4th time I lost the initiative
and failed to sieze. I advanced again from the right flank and got first charge on T2 to shoota boyz.
They lost but held. Counter charge on his part was a failure and I lost only couple of marines and made
my own charge to the advancing boyz. Killing 30 orks in 2 squads before he got strike back and it was
the end for him. T5 when the game ended I held 2 objectives and he had none. While he got a kill point
from one AB I had killed 3 boyz squads and deffkoptas. 20-0

I finished 4th overall with painting not affecting the standings (26 players tot.). 2 first were both SW with
TWC and third was BT. The list worked quite well although the ABs were dead weight and giving easy
kill points to the opponent. They would have been better had I encountered more tanks.

What next?

The Turku tournament is behind and I’m quite satisfied with the 4th position out of 26 players. Even all the “names” were missing this time.

My BA’s are going to be the army that I shall continue develop to the high profile events. Its core is still normal assault marines with jump packs. the support will be devastators, terminators or Land raiders or something else. I’m also building a small mech BA to compete with jumper army.

My other army DE is developing nicely but the need of painting to get it tournament legal is still far away. And I need to play many games before wit it to get the feel of it first. They cannot be played like marines.

After next month we shall have three tournaments with little more than week between.  All of them are 1850 which is the new standard game size here in Finland as it’s also the ETC game size. First of those is the Finnish Team Tournament with three man teams. I think we’ll have a solid team that can compete against every team other than the ETC vets, depending if it’s even possible to all of us to attend.

Then there are two individual events that are going to get app. 40 players (good size here). And I’m going to attend at least one of them. Right now the Turku tournament seems more appealing since it’s doesn’t have weird scenarios where paladins might become T5 or something.

At least I’m going to attend one of those events, maybe two, and with BA.  But how to fine tune my assault marines to the oncoming battles?  At least I’m going to try to have as many tryout games as possible, hopefully against as many different armies as possible.

Battle report BA vs SW 1850

A new battle report after a long time. I had tried to make a game with fellow blogger Aleksi ( see his blog here: http://calltoarms40k.blogspot.com/)a few times and finally managed it done.

As usual I play BA.
Libby, jp, Fear, Lance
2x priests, jp, melta bombs,
10 Assault Marine, 2x melta, pf
10 Assault Marine, 2x melta, pf
10 Assault Marine, 2x melta, pf
10 Assault Marine, 2x melta, pf
10 Assault Marine, 2x melta, pf
5 Devs, 4x missile
5 Devs, 4x missile
5 Devs, 4x missile

So a pretty simple list with lots of fnp marines.

My opponents SW list was in design to be an ETC list which denies enemy mass victory. It had from memory:
Rune Priest, JotWW, hurricane
2x Autocannon, DCCW dreads
10 GH, melta, combimelta, banner, pf, in Redeemer
7 GH, melta, combimelta, banner, pf, in rhino
7 GH, melta, combimelta, banner, pf, in rhino
7 GH, melta, combimelta, banner, pf, in drop pod
5 GH
5 Wolf guard, 1x TDA+cyclone
6 LF 5x missile, Rhino
6 LF, 5x missile

So a lot of everything and not specialized to anything. Perhaps not the scariest SW list I've encountered.
We played a ETC mission with primary on table quarters (8pts), secondary on kill points (4pts) and victory points (8pts) Deployment was pitched battle.

My opponent won the initiative and deployed his his force to the middle with LRR covering the rhinos. Pod was left empty. 5 GH with TDA was on his left flank.
I deployed on my left flank with all 68 marines to get cover from los blocks in the middle. 1 dev-squad was in terrain to get cover but the other 2 were left in the open. Everyone gets fnp and libby is not in the front row. I then stole the initiative, but forgot to roll for red thirst (noob :D)
In my stolen first turn I advance with all asm leaving devs behind. Shooting from devs kill total of one long fnag with missile. Long Fangs also pass successful Fear of the Darkness ld-check. I made a mistake leaving libby in the right most squad which he was able to assault with 10 grey hunters and a wolf guard killing the libby with powerfist.
After the combat I was able to escape with 7 marines killing maybe 2 in return. I also lost the one dev squad in terrain in the terrain and one missile and sarge from the front most dev squad.
All in all not very good start after stealing the initiative. I left my libby to vulnerable position and lost the best positioned dev squad.
After BA T2 the feel looked like in the above picture. In the center I over reacted and charged with 17 marines to the reminding GH and wiped them out. It would have been better to remain in combat and block the land raiders route to my side of the terrain. Now he had a million dollar change to grill same marines. On the upper right corner I charged in to the long fangs and killed wiped them out. I also managed to explode a rhino but failed the charge the continents. My devs also wreck the unpainted dread.

On SW T2 LRR drives forward and manages to immobilize it self while getting better arcs for flamestorms. It still manages to wound 9 marines and I pass 6 or 7 fnp saves. Rhinos follow closely the raider and unload to get shots on my marines. The Runepriest now after the failed charge has a very good JotWW spot. It hits 2 melta an 4 ordinary marines and I successfully make all the I-tests.
On my third turn I clean up his right flank and continue to his middle. Shooting sees 4 ml long fangs dead. The Redeemer still threats my devs and I try to shoot it with 2 melta and then charge it with 2 power fists. I manage to destroy its assault cannon and shake it. The assault in the middle needs to be stopped so that my flank force can join the battle there.
On their turn the SW dread fails its move through cover roll and is not able to tar pit my assault squad. In the middle The 2 squads manage to kill my priest there along with many marines and the cc does not look good to me. The other Rhino backs away while other immobilizes it self behind the Land Raider.
In the end of T4 the situation was following. I was able to join the middle battle but lost my last priest to dangerous terrain test. As a result I was not able to finish the middle battle. on his center I immobilized his second dread with melta. He tried to tank shock me with his rhino.
No picture from T5 but I managed to win the battle around the Land Raider with 3 power fist I had there. He's last squad of 5 gh with Wolf guard had bombarded me all the time with cyclone was on my left table quarter but I contested it with 1 of my surviving assault marine squad. other tree were in my possession. Game ended after T5.
In the a good, fun game. I made a few mistakes, but managed to survive them by luck mostly. I was quite satisfied with the list but still need to think how it performs against other lists. My friends Draigowing with 2 dreadknights and 2 dreadnoughts is still unbeatable for me.

Practise game?

Yesterday I went for gameing store here in Helsinki to have a game against a guy who also frequents there. We have agreed to have 1850 pts game with tournament armies. Here below is pictures how we deployed.
Space wolves: 2 GH squads, 1 in rhino, Lone wolf, and Blood Claws and one special character in LRR. Plain Dreadnought in the middle.
In addition SW podded Logan with Long Fangs close to my deployment.
The game was kill points and 5 objectives with spear head deployment. I had the army from my previous post for first try out.

Quess how the game went. :(

List evolves (high hopes)

I played one testgame with a list that had similar elements. Altough it had different codex and points value it played with same tactics. I was against a few tyranid MC:s backed up by GK dredknight, vendread and some other stuff. I won the game, but my opponents had a very bad luck with dice.
After the game I desided to ditch the other terminator group with their Landraider for more shooty approach. Heres how the list looks like now:

HQ
Librarian, terminator armor and storm bolter
                           Null zone, Gate of infinity
Elite
Terminator Assault squad, 3x thunder hammer & storm shield
·        Land Raider Redeemer, multimelta, extra armor

·        Rhino
Troops
Tactical squad, 5 additional marines, meltagun, missile launcher, meltabombs
·        Razorback with lascannon and twin linked plasma gun

Heavy support
Predator, lascannon sponssons
Whirlwind

Librarian lost his Storm shield due to wysiwyg.
I wanted to get razors to all my tac squads for good shooting power. I still need to think what I'm going to do in a Dawn of War deployment with those 10 man troops and too small transports.
I'm a big fan of autolas predator, and I hope I can use it efficiently even without fast-rule. Same with 2-gun razors.
I really liked to get in one or two attack bikes, but couldn't find the points for it anywhere. Whirlwinds are going to stay in my list for tournament.

Bringers of Dawn “Strike Force Teskhylon”

In three weeks there'll be another NjT-tournament. This time it's supposed to be "not so competetive" event with diferent codecies having age limits from Space Wolves 30 years to Sisters of Battles 18. In addition the tournament has max 16 players and all must bring different codex. Of the 17 codecies available IG is currently not taken (figure that out).

I'm back to where I started: codex Space Marines. I needed to follow a bit my Blood Angels army get it together since it is required to be painted. There is actually a severe penalty of showing up with non painted or non proper models. The Whirlwinds are the new addition in to my list. They arethere because it is not supposed to be competetive and dual raider might be difficult to some armies there. The tactic is to throw two rocks at the enemy followed by small pebbels from the whirlwinds

HQ

Librarian, terminator armor and storm shield

ELITE

Terminator Assault squad, 3x thunder hammer & storm shield
dedicated Land Raider Redeemer, multi melta, extra armor

I'dd like to get a few different test games  before the event because I've never played a full mech before. I've allways had jumpinfantry in my army supported by different elements.
